Modest light-weight summer attire. We will take you shopping the first afternoon of the trip for clothes most suitable for temples- an outfit can cost anywhere from $10-$30. However, you may want to purchase 1 set of Indian clothes before you arrive in India. For men, you need a lightweight cotton suit referred to as a "pajama suit". For ladies, the best choice is a lightweight cotton tunic and pants outfit referred to as a "salwar kameez" or "punjabi". You can find Indian clothes in temple shops or Indian districts of your city.
Swimsuit.
Three lightweight summer outfits, (shorts are not recommended). Please dress modestly. A sweater is also recommended for winter trips.
Five pairs of lightweight socks for temples. Important - stones could burn your feet!
Sandals that can be easily removed.
Bring your usual toiletries as they are not of high quality in many countries.
Lightweight wrap for heavily air-conditioned bus.
Sunglasses.
Umbrella to shade sun if you choose.
Sunscreen.
High quality mosquito repellent. A definite MUST!
Kleenex or baby wipes for bathroom in the woods and toilets (there is generally no toilet paper)!
Pre-moistened towelettes - antibacterial wipes would be a good choice!
Band-Aids and triple antibiotic ointment.
Water bottle carrier.
Small flashlight.
Backpack or large purse to carry your bus goodies, and a smaller fanny pack or purse to carry your valuables into the temple with you.
Over the counter diarrhea medication.
Snacks: trail mix, granola bars, nuts, candy. (For a few meals, food will not be available).
Pens to give to the children that you will meet everywhere--they love brightly-colored pens (especially in India)!
Cortisone cream for insect bites
Tylenol
If you have constipation problems, bring several bottles of magnesium citrate.
Foot powder.
If you take any medications, make sure you have at least a 1 week supply in excess of what you are scheduled for the trip.
If you plan on buying gifts, we suggest bringing at least $200 (American) in traveler's checks. It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Currency Exchange:
Please do not worry about changing money here or at the airport- you will not get a good exchange rate. We will escort you for money-changing on your first day in the country. We will pick you up at the airport, so money is not required the night of your arrival. You can change small amounts of money at the first hotel you are staying at- this is useful for tipping hotel staff that may bring items to your room.
Regarding tipping, we pay for all tips for baggage, meals, bus drivers and guides. You are responsible for tipping hotel staff members who bring items to your room- it is standard to give a small tip. These are the only tips you will take care of yourself.
Food Precautions:
Please drink only bottled water unless told otherwise, even for brushing your teeth. You should eat only hot, cooked food or peeled fruits and vegetables. You will be staying in good hotels, and the food will be very hygienic. Please do not eat from street sellers!
Expect Magic:
There is no way to prepare you for the magic of these sacred journeys! This will be one of the most memorable experiences in your life!
